The S-Plus scripting platform is used for statistical computation and graphics.  It consists of the S-scripting language and a run-time environment with a graphical user interface, display graphics, and a workbench debugger.  The Inference S-Plus Plug-In enables the S scripting language to be executed from within Inference Word by hosting the S-language runtime and collecting the output and graphics for sending to multiple destinations including Microsoft Word documents.
 
The S-Plus scripting platform is widely used in life-sciences R&D, finance modeling and marketing analytics.  The S-plus scripting platform is a commercial implementation (Insightful Corporation) of the S-language for statistical analysis developed by ATT Labs. It contains a core library of over 4000 functions for exploratory data modeling and statistical analysis. With version 8, S-plus scripting now enables cross talk and compatibility with the R scripting platform.

 

Like the R scripting platform, the S-plus scripting platform provides additional modules, developed by Insightful, which extend the functionality of S-PLUS to specific applications such as financial econometrics, clinical trial design and analysis, and environmental statistics.  Also with version 8, S-plus provides a package system that enables compatibility with R scripting platform packages.
